Community Redevelopment & Renewal Grants Update


At the City Council meeting held on September 18, 2023, Assistant to the City Manager, Matthew Pierce, presented the latest information regarding the grants being sought/received by the City.

EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant

  • Awarded $500,000 in 2022 (2022-2026)
  • Identify “brownfields” and return to productive use.
  • Area plans along Monroe Street and W. Front Street.

Rural & Tribal Assistance Pilot Program

  • Applied in August 2023 for $240,000
  • Intersection study (engineering, design) of Garner Bagnal and Shelton Avenue.
  • Safer for pedestrians, better for motorists

RAISE Federal DOT grant

  • Applying Q1 2024
  • $13,000,000-$15,000,000
  • Redevelopment of S. Center & Shelton Avenue

                Streetscaping

                Land acquisition

Thriving Communities Program

  • Awaiting NOFO

The City is seeking suggestions / volunteers to provide guidance and input in the following areas:

  • Shelton Avenue
  • South Statesville
  • W. Front Street
  • Monroe Street
