When you think about Carolina BalloonFest, or, as some old-timers say, “the Statesville Rally,” you think of a sky full of balloons, a huge crowd of cheering spectators, days of music, festival food, fun and games...throw in some turn-up-the-temperature hot air balloon competitions, photo ops for hours on end, and more fun than most folks get to enjoy...right? If you are an old-timer, Iredell County balloon fan, you might remember before all that...when there were no balloons in our skies? You might be one of the lucky locals who remembers going with Mom and Dad up near Love Valley in the fall just to see them. Maybe you were one of the North Iredell farmers who happened upon a balloon a time or two in your field and gave that pilot and his aerostat a ride home, because he didn’t have hired crew to help out that early morning? Well, many around here will say, “Yes! I remember those days!” And if you don’t remember, if you didn’t live around Statesville then...you’re in luck! Bill Meadows grew up in Statesville; he graduated Statesville High in 1956. Was In Civil Air Patrol around here...flew a little plane...Had connections and a big sense of adventure...Big!
